Replacing Locks
Replacing or installing new locks in your property is one of the ways you can reduce the chances of burglary. There are different types of lock to consider including night latch, mortice style, and euro lock cylinders. Understanding the benefits of these can help you to decide which lock suits your needs best. A night latch is often referred to as a Yale type lock and works by pulling or slamming a door shut. Once this has happened, you will need a key to open the door from the outside. These can be used on both front and back doors, and are most commonly made by Yale, Ingersoll and Era.
Mortice style locks are operated by a longer silver or brass flag type key on the end in a symmetrical pattern. There are ranges from 2 to 5 lever and it is often preferred by insurance companies as the lock type will have been tested against different forms of attack. Euro cylinder locks are incredibly common and are made by a variety of brands including Yale, Asec, Union, Federal, and Era. Exiting a property can be easy with these locks if they have a thumb turn on the inside, giving you less to worry about in an emergency. You are most likely to see these locks on patio doors.
Master Keys
As a commercial business, you can often need access to security keys and master keys. A master key is a key which opens several different locks, all of which have their own individual keys. This type of key is particularly important to have if you are a business owner or landlord. The key looks no different from a normal key and cuts down on the need to carry around numerous keys. It works by allowing locks to recognise both the individual key and the master key, enabling those with a master key access. The key depends on the lock system in place, and there are several to chose from including multi occupancy. A multi occupancy or HMO system are typical for flats, houses of multiple occupancy, and landlords.
Why use British Standard Locks?
British Standard locks should always be used as they have been thoroughly tested and approved by the British Standards Institution (BSI). There are many different standards for doors and windows and this should be noted on the lock and packaging it comes in. BS 7412:2007 and BS EN 12608:2003 refers to windows and doors made from uPVC, BS 644:2012 refers to timber windows and doors, and BS 6510:2010 refers to steel framed windows and doors. Enhanced security lock cylinders will be marked with TS 007 and cylinders for locks will be marked with BS EN 1303:2005.
These standards do not completely guarantee that your home will not be entered. However, it is important that they are used. The effectiveness of any lock depends on the door and window they are attached to. If they are old or worn, then the lock may not be as successful.
