Types of Lock

Understanding the different locks that you can have installed is important to help you decide which security system you would like in place on your property. There are several to pick from, including the following:

  • Mortice
One of the most common types of lock that requires a key to both lock and open. These should comply with British Standard BS3621. They can be used on external doors and should have at least 5 levers marked on the face plate.
  • Nightlatches
Known sometimes as secondary locks and usually come in two main forms, standard and deadlocking. Standards lock automatically unless the snib to hold the latch back is used and deadlocks automatically lock and need a key to be opened from the outside.
  • Multi-Point Locking Systems
These are extremely common and feature mainly on uPVC doors. They typically have a minimum of 3 locking points that lock simultaneously with the turn of a key. Ideal for external use, these locks feature hook bolts, camrollers, or pins.
  • Cylinder
These locks can be used for both internal and external use and are easy to install. It is always important to check that these have a Kitemark or ES symbol on them.
  • Sliding Patio Locks
As a vulnerable part of a home, patio doors need high security lock features. As well as the standard lock, it may be worth fitting an anti-lift device.
  • Key-Operated Security Bolts
Most typically seen on French and Double Doors, these locks should be fitted to both the top and bottom of a door. However, they can only be as strong as the screws that hold them in place.
  • Closed Shackle Padlocks
These padlocks are more difficult to attack as they help to prevent the use of saws and bolt cutters to remove them. Ideal for use on chains, gates, and garden sheds.
  • Straight Shackle or Shutter Padlocks
Easy to fit and are used most commonly on gates, chains and shutters.
  • Long Shackle Padlocks
Common once again for gates and sheds, these padlocks allow for more flexibility but can enable easy attack from saws or bolt cutters.

Tips To Prevent Burglary

Preventing a break in from happening at your home or business requires up-to-date security and working locks. Assessing the exterior of your home and its weaknesses is a great place to start. Whether its replacing a broken fence or repairing a lock which isn’t as good as it once was, this can help to improve the safety of your home. Motion sensor light systems are another way of putting off would-be thieves from targeting your home. The lights will be triggered if there is any movement around your home. CCTV systems can also provide an extra layer of security, recording any suspicious activity.
